new york

Everytime I go back to New York I realize just how much I love the city. Even though it was about 100 degress, which felt like hell after a very cold SF summer, and despite the thick humidity, the energy was as palpable as ever.

I had a great time visiting my parents. And a wild time with the SLU crew. Here is a rundown of the craziness (in no particular order since everything was equally awesome).

10) Camp Nabby

When I first got home my parents were busy finishing up the camp season. I went up to visit and helped take some video of the end of the year performance. The campers wrote all the song lyrics which made the show that much more fun to watch. The first of 4 videos is below. Here are videos 23 and 4.

9) Frying Pan

My first night in town I met the crew at Frying Pan which is an outdoor bar on the pier off of 26th street. The location is amazing and the place is stacked with talent. We drank coronas by the bucket and made a lot of noise.

8 ) Food

I ate a ton. I even got the Zagat “Foodie” badge on Foursquare. The highlights were trips to Peter’s Since 1969 (pictured), Grimaldi’s, La Mela, Chicken & Gyro Cart, JP Doyle’s, MandooPete’s Tavern and Krolewskie Jadlo.

7) Boat Rides

My parents and I took the Blue Moon out for a cruise on the Hudson and, in the city, the water taxi from DUMBO to the South Street Seaport. Both trips provided glorious views.

6) Golf with Dad

This was a great day. It had be scorching hot in NY for weeks, but the day we scheduled was actually quite cool and breezy. Although the weather was in a favor, we still struggled on the course. I stopped keeping score after about 7 holes, but let’s just say that Dad won the round.

5) SLU Crew Dinner

Speaking of food, the SLU crew organized a very successful dinner at La Mela in Little Italy. It was a 5 course meal and all-you-can-drink special for about $50 a pop. We dominated. I’m glad I don’t have video of my toast, which involved spilling red wine on Cozza’s white shirt, so here is Sean’s.

4) Brooklyn Bowl

We didn’t really have plans for the last Saturday night in town, so we (Me, Cozza & Regan) decided to check out Brooklyn Bowl. Now, this place is relatively new, so none of us knew what to expect. We got there early to eat dinner and had planned on maybe grabbing some drinks. We ended up staying until 2am and rocking out to two awesome performances. First up was The Pimps of Joytime. These guys were more jam-band-funky, but they proved to be the perfect warm up for our pregame. The second set was a mix of people including ClassixxEli Escobar and Punches. I’m not entirely sure who was who, but you can check out the promo here. Anyway, we weaseled our way to the front of the stage and that’s where we stayed for a couple of hours while jumping around and getting sweaty.

3) PS1 Summer Warm Up

Cozza mentioned this out of the blue. I’m glad he did. Not only was it an excuse to go check out the museum, but it was also an opportunity to day drink outside. And there was break dancing. FTW.

2) Street Art

I miss the creativity that is pasted, sprayed, taped and glued to the walls in the city. The street art scene in SF is dense, but it doesn’t compare to areas like Williamsburg and the Lower East Side.

1) Taking Pictures, Making Slideshows

Since I didn’t have time to edit any of my videos, here is a great NY tribute by some German tourists.

My #CodeOrgan obsession and Hipsters Falling

Here are a couple of videos I’ve enjoyed recently. I also fell in love with a codeorgan.

You will never take our bike lanes!

This video features two of my favorite things, cycling and street art, and was shot in my old neighborhood. It shows cyclists in Williamsburg replacing the removed bike lane on Bedford Ave. Here is the article (via @ChromeBagsSF).

I know how awful it is biking on Bedford Ave to get to the bridge. There are tons of people and cars, making a safe ride relatively impossible. I always liked to use Berry or Wythe (for safety reasons), but like the video mentions, Bedford is the most convenient straight-shot if you live in Williamsburg or Greenpoint. It’s beyond dumb to remove this lane since it’s the only thing helping to protect cyclists. It also makes getting to the Endless Summer taco truck much easier.

I love you Endless Summer.
