Art in Storefronts

photo-15

I’m a little late to the party on this one, but last week Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the Art in Storefronts pilot effort. The mission of the program is to “reinvigorate neighborhoods that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.” Sounds like a really noble and worthwhile cause, but I have a feeling someone in the Mayor’s office was taking notes a few months back during a certain installation (curated by Ali & Garrison Buxton from Ad Hoc Art) in Brooklyn. Does Willoughby Windows ring any bells?

Honestly, I could care less where the idea came from, the important thing is that the city is actually making an effort. The San Francisco community is jam packed with brilliant artists and crummy, abandoned storefronts so why not let the two sides sleep together. It definitely doesn’t hurt to help brighten a few neighborhoods (Central Market, Mission, Bayview, Tenderloin) and provide some well needed inspiration.

I biked past a couple of the pilot storefronts today on Market & Turk. Luckily I remembered that I downloaded the Autostitch app for my iPhone a while back specifically for long horizontal murals. The leaderboard picture above is a mural created by Helen Bayly & Leanne Miller, and was expertly stitched by me. Hopefully I’ll catch some more of these around my neighborhood soon. Good looks SFAC, keep chirping in the Mayor’s ear.

Made in Skewville

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Brooklyn’s Factory Fresh has released uncut Skewville sneakers and several other classic screen-printed posters. I really love this work. If you don’t, don’t worry. They sell hype too.
